U.S. to Join U.N. Human Rights Council, Reversing Bush Policy
The Obama administration decided Tuesday to seek a seat on the U.N. Human Rights Council, reversing a decision by the Bush administration to shun the United Nations' premier rights body to protest the influence of repressive states.

"Human rights are an essential element of American global foreign policy," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement. "With others, we will engage in the work of improving the U.N. human rights system. . . . We believe every nation must live by and help shape global rules that ensure people enjoy the right to live freely and participate fully in their societies."

Hillsborough Clerk Among 4 Lauded For Human Rights Work

TAMPA - Four Hillsborough County residents, including Clerk of the Circuit Court Pat Frank, were honored today as advocates for human rights.

Frank won the Hank Warren Award, given to an elected or appointed official each year by the Tampa/Hillsborough County Human Rights Council for supporting legislation or policies furthering opportunities in health care, education and housing and public accommodations.

On Friday, December 12, 2008 the Human Rights Council (HRC) will hold its 35th Annual Human Rights Awards Breakfast with the theme, "Celebrating 60 Years of Human Rights", marking sixty years since the U.N. adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The keynote speaker for the event is the noted Human Rights authority and Eckerd College Professor Dr. William F. Felice.

Every year the Human Rights Council presents awards to deserving citizens and organizations that ensure human rights remains a high priority in Tampa and Hillsborough County.
